My husband loves a really good burger. One of his other summer favorites is fried-green tomatoes. I thought I would combine some of my husband’s favorite flavors and make him the Best Southern Style Burger.
See, my husband is from Tennessee, so this burger reminded him of all his favorite southern flavors from childhood.
Southern Burgers Made In A Few Easy Steps
Start by making the gluten-free fried green tomatoes. They are super easy to make, and you can find the recipe for my gluten-free fried green tomatoes HERE. Keep your fried green-tomatoes warm by placing them on a baking sheet in the oven set at 200º F.
You will only need to make one or two fried green tomatoes depending on the size of your tomatoes. My recipe calls for three tomatoes. I always like to make them all because I like to have the extras to eat. They are SO good!
The next thing you want to do after forming your hamburger patties is to season them on both sides. These beef burgers don’t need a whole lot of seasoning, just salt, pepper, and onion powder. (photo 1)
To keep your burgers from shrinking too much, take your thumb and make a little indent in the center of the patties. (photo 1)
I like using my cast iron skillet to pan-fry the burgers and bacon together, but these burgers would be perfect on the grill too. (photo 2)
Once your burgers are fully cooked, top them with pimento cheese and allow it to melt slightly. (photo 3)
Assemble the southern style burger by slicing the Schär Ciabatta Rolls in half, adding the first layer of lettuce, then the pimento cheese covered burger, then gluten-free fried green tomato and finally the bacon. Southern Style Burger perfection!
Here’s the thing, a burger is as good as the bun it’s on. The burger bun is an important part of the flavor of the burger.
Not all gluten-free buns are created equal my friends. Schär’s Ciabatta Rolls are amazing! They are soft and have the same flavor and texture as regular buns.
Let me say that again, they are soft and will not crumble while you are eating them. They were also the perfect size for these burgers too.
I promise you won’t even know that the Schär Ciabatta Rolls are gluten-free. Yes, they are that good!
Schär is one of my favorite gluten-free companies. When I went gluten-free in 2010 they were the first company I found that had products that tasted normal.
Being able to eat pizza (which is one of my favorite foods ), with their pizza crust was a life saver for me, it helped me feel normal as I started my gluten-free journey.
Schär has a whole line of certified gluten-free breads, buns, rolls, crackers, cookies, pizza crust and so much more.
I also love that I am able to find my favorite Schär products at my local Walmart. You can also use their store finder to see where you can find their products near you.
This juicy beef burger topped with thick cut bacon, pimento cheese, and a fried green tomato is like no burger you have ever had!
Whether you are grilling burgers or frying them up in a pan, these are a showstopper burger that will have you coming back for more.
These Southern Style Burgers are easy to make and would be perfect to make for Father’s Day.
Try my Gluten-Free Bacon, Tomato and Cheese Macaroni Salad recipe. It would be a perfect side for this Sothern Style Burger!

The Best Southern Style Burger
Ingredients
- 1/2 lb ground beef
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 cup gluten-free pimento cheese , I used Italian Rose Pimento and Cheese Spread
- 4 gluten-free fried green tomatoes ,my recipe is linked above
- 8 slices thick cut bacon , gluten-free
- 4 slices lettuce
- 4 Schär Ciabatta Rolls
Instructions
- First, make the gluten-free fried green tomatoes. You can get the recipe HERE. Keep warm on a baking sheet in a 200º F oven. You will only need to make one to two fried green tomato depending on the size of your tomatoes. My recipe calls for three tomatoes and I always make them all because I like to have extras to eat.
- In a small bowl combine the salt, pepper and onion powder.
- Form patties to the size of your hand. Sprinkle them on both sides with the seasoning mix. Use your thumb to make an indent in the center of the burger patties to help to keep them from shrinking too much.
- In a large pan, I like to use a cast iron pan, add a little bit of oil or gluten-free cooking spray and cook the patties and bacon together until they are fully cooked.
- Remove the bacon from the pan and place on a towel-lined plate.
- Spoon the pimento cheese on top of the burgers and allow to slightly melt.
- Slice the Schär Ciabatta Rolls in half. Assemble the burgers by adding the lettuce, then the pimento cheese covered burger, then fried green tomato, and lastly the bacon and top of the bun.
- Enjoy!
