Gluten-Free Waffles
I have had several readers ask me if they could use my Easy Gluten-Free Pancakes recipe to make waffles. Waffles are a little different than pancakes, but they are still made with the same simple ingredients as pancakes just in different amounts.
It is so easy to make gluten-free waffles from scratch! I promise, once you make these homemade gluten-free waffles, you won’t go back to box mixes like gluten-free Bisquick again. You can see just how easy these waffles are to make in the recipe video.
How To Make Gluten-Free Waffles
- I always like to start by mixing my liquid ingredients first. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs (or egg replacer), granulated sugar, pure vanilla extract, and vegetable oil. (photo 1)
- Add the gluten-free flour, gluten-free baking powder, and salt to the egg mixture and mix until fully combined. (photo 2)
- Stir in milk and mix until smooth. (photo 3)
- Use a greased ice-cream scoop to pour the batter onto a greased, preheated waffle maker. (photo 4)
- Cook the waffles according to the waffle maker’s directions or until they are golden brown. I have an Oster Waffle Maker. (photo 5)
- Top with butter, syrup, or your favorite topping. Enjoy!
- Store leftovers in an air-tight container.
- These waffles can be frozen and reheated in the microwave. To freeze the waffles, allow them to completely cool first. Place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet and flash freeze them for 10 minutes. Flash freezing them keeps them from sticking together. Once the waffles are flash-frozen, you can remove them from the baking sheet and place them inside a freezer-safe bag or air-tight container.
Homemade Waffle Making Tips
- Allow your waffle maker to heat up before pouring on the batter.
- Use gluten-free cooking spray to grease the waffle maker with every waffle you make.
- Use a greased ice cream scoop to portion out the batter. Just scoop the waffle batter and pour onto your greased waffle maker. My waffle maker takes 2 scoops.
- Add your favorite mix-ins like chocolate chips or blueberries!
- If you’re not going to enjoy your waffle straight out of the waffle maker place then on a parchment-lined baking sheet and put them in a preheated oven to 200°F and keep them warm.
- Make sure your syrup is gluten-free. I like pure maple syrup.
Fun Waffle Mix-In Ideas
Waffles are super versatile, and you can easily add your favorite flavor mix-ins to the batter.
- chocolate chips
- blueberries
- snickerdoodle-by adding brown sugar and cinnamon to the batter
- bacon waffles-chopped cooked bacon to the batter
Waffle Toppings Ideas
Waffles can be either sweet or savory depending on what you top them with.
- fresh berries and whipped cream
- peanut butter
- chocolate sauce
- bananas
- pure maple, blueberry, strawberry or blackberry syrup
- powdered sugar
- ice cream (for dessert)
- use in place of an English muffin for eggs benedict
Gluten-Free Waffle Mix
This gluten-free waffle mix can be made ahead of time and stored an air-tight container for later. So later, all you will have to do is add the wet ingredients.
Just like your favorite store-bought gluten-free waffle mix. Making a homemade waffle mix will also save you money!
Can The Waffles Be Made Ahead Of Time?
Yes, the waffle batter can be made the night before and stored in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours. You can store the cooked waffles in an air-tight container for up to thee days before serving them.
How To Freeze Waffles
Freezing waffles help with breakfast on busy mornings. The next time you make waffles, make an extra batch, and keep them in the freezer. These are super easy to freeze and reheat.
If you buy frozen, gluten-free waffles, this waffle recipe is going to save you money! Not only are these waffles budget-friendly, but they taste so much better than any of the brands of gluten-free frozen waffles.
To freeze the waffles, allow them to completely cool. Place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet and flash freeze them for 10 minutes. Flash freezing them keeps them from sticking together.
Once they are flash-frozen, you can remove them from the baking sheet and place them inside a freezer-safe bag or air-tight container.
Gluten-Free Flour
I made these gluten-free waffles with Pillsbury gluten-free flour. I like using a cup for cup gluten-free rice flour blend. A cup for cup all-purpose gluten-free flour blend is one that already has xanthan gum it.
Xanthan gum makes gluten-free baking so much easier! It helps replace the elasticity and texture of gluten. Make sure not to add any extra xanthan gum to your flour if it already includes it. If you do, you will get gummy waffles!
Most gluten-free all-purpose flours already have xanthan gum already in them, so make sure to check the ingredients of your gluten-free flour.
I like Pillsbury gluten-free flour. Not all gluten-free flours are created equal. You may experience different baking results depending on the gluten-free flour blend you choose.
This recipe will not work with almond or coconut flour.
Tip For Measuring Gluten-Free Flour
I have found the best way to measure gluten-free flour is the “spoon & level” method. First I use a spoon to scoop the flour into the measuring cup. After I have spooned the flour into the measuring cup, I use the back of a knife to level off the top of the measuring cup.
Please do not scoop the flour directly out of the bag with your measuring cup. Or you can get too much flour in the recipe.
Gluten-Free and Dairy-Free Waffles
I have also included a dairy-free option for this gluten-free waffle recipe. Most of my family is also dairy-free so I always try and have a dairy-free option to my recipes. So you too can enjoy gluten-free and dairy-free waffles.
For the dairy-free version of this recipe, I used unsweetened almond milk.
Some of my favorite dairy-free alternatives that I like to bake and cook with are unsweetened almond, cashew, or coconut milk. I also like baking with Smart Balance butter.
Egg-Free Cooking
My husband recently found out he has an egg sensitivity, so I have been learning to cook and bake egg-free as well. I used Bob’s Red Mill Gluten-Free Egg Replacer, to test out an egg-free version. They turned out great! By using dairy-free milk and the egg replacer, these can be gluten-free and vegan waffles.
Easy Gluten-Free Waffles
This is my family’s favorite tried and true waffle recipe. These gluten-free waffles always come out fluffy, soft in the inside and crispy on the outside.

These turned out fantastic but I’m having one issue – they taste sort of bitter? The first time I made them with bob’s red mill egg replacer and thought maybe the added baking soda/baking powder on top of the 4tsp was too much. This time I used 2 flax eggs. Texture great but again seems to taste bitter. I have no idea what it could be!
Audrey says
Hi Katie! The bitter taste may be coming from the gluten-free flour blend you are using. For me, any gluten-free flour blends that have sorghum flour taste bitter to me.

Just bought an Oster Waffle Maker yesterday and tried this this morning, using the dairy, gluten, and egg free suggestions. It’s hard to enjoy breakfast when you are egg, gluten and dairy free. But this was wonderful! I used King Arthur Measure for Measure flour and it worked great. Thank you!

I have been trying to find a way to make my own gluten-free waffles. I have tried many frozen varieties and they are tasteless. I recently tried this recipe with final success. I purchased a Dash Mini Waffle Maker that makes one small waffle approximately 4″ round. They come out perfectly! I tried a Belgian waffle maker and it did not cook the batter all the way. The smaller, thinner waffle maker did the trick! Thank you for letting me to be able to enjoy waffles with others. I get about 12 mini waffles per recipe. I make them, let them cool and then freeze them. I take them out and just toast them to warm.

Enjoyed a great waffle breakfast this morning using Mama’s recipe. This is the first time I visited this website and it will defiantly not be the last time. I am the only one in my family who has to be gluten free; my husband is pretty good about eating most food I prepare or bake. He loved these waffles! I may try using raw sugar next time as suggested on a post. The last of the batter I added an over ripe banana and waffles were really great. I used Pamela’s Gluten-free + Vegan All-Purpose Flour Artisan Blend+ Whole Grain. This was first time using this flour and I will recommend it. I have not bought a gluten-free cookbook, yet, but will now. I have had Celiac for 9 yrs and have really enjoyed many of the changes in foods over the years. I still love cooking from scratch in my own kitchen the best. Thank you for this recipe.
Jane says
Fantastic. I have tried several other recipes that did not turn out too well. These were perfect! Thanks so much!

Hi Audrey: Thank you so much for this recipe! My daughter with special needs was just diagnosed with Celiac’s. She has always loved Eggo waffles, so I wasn’t sure she would eat homemade ones. I bought cup-4-cup flour from Wiilliams Sonoma and a new waffle maker. She loves them! It’s been a little daunting purging my entire kitchen of anything with gluten (this crap is a filler for everything…sad). I separated the eggs and whipped the whites in a cold bowl and then folded them in at the end. The recipe made 10 big waffles that were soft, but a little crispy on the edges. You can definitely only eat one of these! I am so grateful for this recipe.
Sean Martin says
We must have made this five or six times in the last few months. Love the ratios and they waffles come out great. We use Bob’s Red Mill 1:1 most of the time. Recently made with the Costco Namaste brand and that mix of brown rice based flour definitely makes it more dense so I will up the ratio of liquid (but secretly just using Bob’s). Great recipe!

I just made this for brunch and my hubby loved them! He hasn’t been a fan of gluten free since I have had to go this route but these were a huge hit. I did substitute raw sugar in place of the granulated as I need less processed foods in my diet and it made them superb! You almost didn’t need the maple syrup as the raw sugar added a nice taste to them. I might go less on the next batch I make though as they were a bit on the sweet side for me. I am also going to try to add some blueberries in them and freeze them for snacks etc. Thank you so much for this awesome recipe!

I became Celiac just under 5 months ago and haven’t had a pancake or waffle since then. I gave my son and daughter-in-law a Cusinart double belgian waffle maker for Christmas. Today, I went to my son’s house with my gluten-free flour in tow, and my daughter-in-law made waffles using your recipe. They were heavenly … absolutely divine!!! They were as good, if not better, than any regular belgian waffle that I have had before, and they were wonderfully light and fluffy. Thank you for taking your time to create gluten-free recipes, and for sharing your amazing creations with others.

Bless your heart, these waffles are simply awesome! I made the dairy- and egg-free version and they turned out great. The entire family loved them! This is the first recipe that I have found that produces not simply an edible waffle but a great one with egg replacer. Thank you for bringing waffles back to our menu!
Nikki says
This is the best gluten free waffle recipe I’ve made! Perfect recipe!
Coriander says
Adapted this recipe for what I had and preferences, first time made they were extra crisp and good using 2tbs. sugar, 1/2 Bob’s GF all-purpose flour and 1/2 Bob’s 1 to 1 GF flour, golden flax eggs (1tbs. flax meal to 3 tbs. water), and coconut oil. Made again yesterday and used 1/4 cup coconut oil, and very scant tbs. sugar. They were more tender with less oil, and still crunchy crispy. Next time I will use one tsp. sugar, 1tsp. vanilla extract, and 1/4 coconut oil. This is a very well designed recipe, it really hits the spot after having nothing like a good waffle for years! Also, excellent with fresh sliced peaches alongside. Definitely going to check out your other recipes!
Dionne says
Our 12yo daughter has made these several times and they’ve turned out amazing every time! She uses whole cow milk and the Namaste gf flour mix. So, so good. Thank you!

I don’t usually comment, but this recipe was such a pleasant surprise I had to leave feedback! I have tried a few gluten-free vegan waffle recipes with less-than-stellar results. This one was spot-on! I used Bob’s Red Mill 1-to-1 baking flour, Bob’s Red Mill egg-replacer, and coconut milk. It was the perfect crispy outside and not dried out or rubbery in the middle. Thank you for doing the work of creating this recipe! I can’t wait to check out some more of your recipes.

These were probably the best gluten free wafles I have ever made (been Gf for 4 years now). A few notes: the milk didn’t blend into the ingredients very well for me, so I ended up dumping the batter into my vitamix to blend until smooth, and this worked great. Be cautious with Bob’s Red mill egg replacer, as they offer a gluten free version as well as one that contains wheat. I used ener-g egg replacer and it worked great. I used melted coconut oil in place of vegetable oil, and it’s gave a great flavor to the waffles, as well as making them extra crisp. Absolutely delicious and will make again and again.
Audrey says

Our daughter was recently diagnosed celiac—we have a large family and find that baking and cooking from scratch helps the budget significantly! I was so nervous about going gluten free—that no one would like it, that we’d spend too much money, that nothing would turn out yummy. This recipe was my first gluten free waffle recipe and they’re AMAZING! These might be my favorite even if they weren’t gluten free! Thanks so very much!!
