What Is A Trifle?
Making a gluten-free dessert does not get any easier than this trifle recipe!
A trifle is a layered dessert originated in England and consists of layers of cake, fruit, and custard. Traditionally the cake was soaked in alcohol, layered with fruit jelly and served in a round glass dish.
The American version of the trifle is a little simpler. American trifle recipes include cubed cake, pudding, fruit and whipped topping. It is also served in a round clear glass dish called a Trifle Bowl, so you can see the layers of the dessert.
My recipe for this gluten-free trifle is even easier because I used Schär Sch’nacks for the cake layer and whipped up an easy no-bake cheesecake filling instead of the pudding layer. It’s always fun to add a new twist to a traditional dessert recipe.
How To Make A Gluten-Free Trifle
- Using a mixer, beat the cream cheese until smooth.
- Add the pure vanilla extract and lemon juice to the whipped cream cheese. Mix until fully combined.
- Add the powdered sugar one cup at a time and mix until fully combined and creamy.
- Add 3 cups of the Cool Whip (one 8-ounce tub) and whip on low until fully combined. (photo 1)
- Cut the Sch’nacks cakes into bite-sized pieces. Place half the cake pieces in the bottom of a large trifle bowl. (photo 2)
- Spoon half of the cheesecake filling on top of the snack cakes in the bottom of the bowl. Use a spatula or the back of a spoon to spread the cheesecake filling out evenly. (photo 3)
- Add half of the sliced strawberries in an even layer on top of the cheesecake filling. (photo 4)
- Repeat the layers (snack cakes, filling, and berries) (photo 5)
- Add 1 ½ cups of the Cool Whip on the top of the trifle. Use a spatula to smooth over the top of the layers.
- I used a Wilton 1M tip to pipe the whipped topping swirls on the top and added more strawberries for decoration.
- Serve and enjoy!
- Cover and store the trifle in the refrigerator until ready to serve.
- The trifle can be kept refrigerated for up to 3 days.
Gluten-Free Snacks
I used Schär Sch’nacks as the cake layer of this gluten-free trifle dessert. They are little single-serve vanilla cakes that are filled with cream and dipped in German chocolate. If you have not had them lately, Schär has a new and improved recipe for their Sch’nacks.
My kids love Sch’nacks as a special treat. Schär makes having a gluten-free special treat easy. They have a whole line of certified gluten-free snacks.
Not only do they make awesome gluten-free snacks, but they have everything from certified gluten-free bread, to rolls, pizza crust, cookies, and crackers.
I also love that I am able to find my favorite Schär products at my local Walmart. You can also buy their gluten-free products in their new online store or use their store finder to see where you can find their products near you.
