Valentines Day Cookies

I simply love baking gluten-free cookies. With valentines day swiftly approaching I wanted to make an easy dessert that would be perfect to bring to parties. Chocolate and Valentine’s day go hand and hand, so I knew that I wanted to make a chocolate treat.

One of my favorite flavors of baking chocolate treats is red velvet. There is something just so decent about red velvet.  These gluten-free red velvet chocolate chip cookies are so easy to make. It’s really just a fancier version of your favorite gluten-free chocolate chip cookie. Oh, and it’s double the chocolate.

All About Red Velvet

What’s so fun about red velvet desserts is you have complete control over how red you want it. If you want less, add less – if you want more, add more. If you’re not a fan of red food coloring, then you can just leave it out.

Most red velvet desserts have a cream cheese frosting. I added the white chocolate chips to the cookies to give it the same flavor creamy flavor.

Gluten-Free Flour

I like Pillsbury gluten-free flourNot all gluten-free flours are created equal. You may experience different baking results depending on the gluten-free flour blend you choose.

Dairy-Free Baking

I have also included a dairy-free option to the gluten-free red velvet cookies.   My husband, myself and youngest son are all dairy-free as well. I used Smart Balance butter for the dairy-free option.

So, now you too can enjoy a gluten-free and dairy-free red velvet cookie. I promise that it is just as delicious dairy-free butter, dairy-free milk and dairy-free chocolate chips.

Some of my favorite dairy-free alternatives that I like to bake with are almond, cashew or coconut milk. I also like baking with coconut oil or Earth Balance or Smart Balance butter.

Gluten-Free Red Velvet Chocolate Chip Cookies {Dairy-Free Option}

These gluten-free red velvet chocolate chip cookies are soft, chewy and chocolately delicious! They are super easy to make and would be perfect to make for Valentines Day.

Ingredients 

  • 1 1/2 cups  gluten-free all-purpose flour, I like Pillsbury gluten-free
  • 1/4 teaspoon xanthan gum, leave out if your flour already has it
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened to room temperature. (Dairy-free use Earth Balance or Smart Balance butter)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 egg, room temperature
  • 1 tablespoon milk, dairy-free use coconut, almond or cashew milk
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon gluten-free red food coloring, or all natural food coloring
  • 1 cup gluten-free chocolate chips- I used 1/2 cup white chocolate chips and 1/2 cup chocolate chips, For dairy-free I like Enjoy Life Foods chocolate chips

Instructions 

  • In a large bowl beat butter until creamy.
  • Add the brown sugar and sugar to the butter and beat until creamy. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl as needed.
  • Beat in the egg, milk, and pure vanilla extract and mix until fully combined.
  • Add gluten-free red food coloring and mix until fully combined.
  • In a medium bowl add gluten-free flour, salt,  xanthan gum (leave out if your flour already has it), cocoa powder and baking soda and whisk together until fully combined.
  • Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until fully combined.
  • Add chocolate chips and mix until fully combined.
  • Cover the cookie dough and chill for at least 1 hour.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Line two large cookie sheets with parchment paper.
  • Scoop a heaping tablespoon of the cookie dough and roll into a ball. (I use a cookie scoop.)
  • Place cookie balls onto lined cookie sheets and bake for 11-12 minutes.
  • The cookies will not spread too much while baking.
  • Once cookies are done, press down on the warm cookies to slightly flatten and form crinkles. I even stick a few chocolate chips into the tops of the warm cookies.
  • Allow the cookies to cool on the cookie sheet for at least 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Enjoy!

  1. Have made these once and they were AMAZING! Thank you for so many wonderful – and easy to tackle! – recipes. 🙂 I want to make again for the holidays and was wondering if they could be frozen? If so, would it be best to freeze the unbaked dough balls, or go ahead and bake, cool, and freeze? Thank you so much!

  4. These turned out so delicious! I added about 3/4 tbsp of coffee because I heard it would enhance the chocolate flavor (not sure if it did or not, haha!) — and they are so tasty! I also omitted the chocolate chips and made a cream cheese frosting to top. Thanks so much for this recipe, from a very happy celiac! Do you typically put these in a sealed container and store at room temp, or do you refrigerate?

  5. They tasted incredible. Only negative is they didn’t end up red they look like chocolate cookies.which is unfortunate because my brother likes the taste of chocolate but not the look. Other than that would one hundred percent make again.

  8. I absolutely LOVE these cookies and so does my boyfriend! I have been gluten free for a couple years now, but recently my boyfriend found out he has a gluten allergy. He loves red velvet and was very disappointed that he wouldn’t be able to eat the cookies I used to make him. I went online and found this recipe and he LOVES it. We’re at college now but every time I go home he asks me if I can make him a batch before I come back. Thank you SO much for this recipe, it makes it a little easier to be gluten free!
