Best Thickener For Gluten-Free Gravy

There are two easy options to thicken gluten-free gravy. When using gluten-free flour to thicken gravy, you will need to make a roux with the butter and gluten-free flour before adding in the gluten-free broth. This easy process is detailed in the recipe steps below.

An easy substitute for the gluten-free flour is cornstarch. Cornstarch is gluten-free and is easily available. You will need to make a cornstarch slurry before adding it to the gluten-free broth. Making a cornstarch slurry is easy and it is included in the recipe below.

You can use gluten-free flour or cornstarch to thicken your gluten-free gravy. Both options make a thick and flavorful gluten-free gravy. Each option is included in the recipe card below.

How Do I Use Pan Drippings To Make Gravy?

If you are going to use the pan drippings from your meat, you will need to strain out the fat or gristle. You can pour the dripping liquid through a fine-mesh strainer into a measuring cup.

Make sure to allow the drippings to cool before making the gluten-free gravy. You may want to taste the dripping to see how strong the flavor is. If the flavor is really strong, you can water down the drippings before adding it to the melted butter.

What Kind of Gluten-Free Broth Makes The Best Gravy?

It all depends on what flavor of gravy you want for your meal. You can use gluten-free chicken, beef, or vegetable broth. Just make sure that the broth you are using is labeled gluten-free.

You can make your own broth by using gluten-free bouillon cubes or gluten-free granules.

Tips For Making The Best Gluten-Free Gravy

  • You can use cornstarch in place of the gluten-free flour to thicken the gravy. You will need to make a cornstarch slurry before adding it to the gravy mixture. In a small bowl whisk together 3 tablespoons of cornstarch and 2 tablespoons of water until smooth.
  • To make a more savory gravy you can add dried thyme, dried sage, onion powder, or garlic powder to the gravy.
  • Make sure to taste the gravy before salting. Some gluten-free broths or bouillons are saltier than others.
  • You can easily make this gravy dairy-free by using your favorite dairy-free butter.

  1. Today’s GF flour mixes are WAY better than they were even 5 years ago. I made Turkey Day gravy using my 24 hour turkey stock. I did use equal parts butter and flour to make my roux, so a slight adjustment there. I also used Poultry seasoning to taste as well as the S&P you recommended. This gravy was a dead ringer for my Grandmother’s gravy, smooth and silky, and it held well with becoming a gelled clump. Bravo! I use your site for inspiration because my daughter has developed celiac as she grew older and you area regular life saver.

  2. This was the star of the evening yesterday! We had 6 cups of turkey drippings, so I tripled this recipe. Good thing because almost all of it disappeared yesterday. Super yummy. I think next time I will use fresh thyme and, if I can find it, marjoram. This was one of the few times that I’ve been able to have gravy – now it’s time to get a gravy boat! Thank you!

  3. Delicious and very easy to make. I made mine using bone broth and served it with chicken and mashed potatoes. It was a great addition to my otherwise ordinary meal. I will definitely use this recipe again!

  4. I just made this for my wife. She’s been having a rough time with the dairy-free and gluten free diet for her health. She hasn’t found a GF bread that tastes good. This was a great recipe, great flavor, and easy prep! I will be making 2 loaves of this weekly from now on!

  5. Thank you, Audrey! I needed a quick and easy gravy recipe for our huge family gathering. It’s perfect for the mashed potatoes and the turkey, too! I will definitely make this one again and again!
