Crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, these nuggets are made with simple, gluten-free ingredients and are always a hit with kids and picky eaters alike. When I went gluten-free back in 2010, chicken nuggets were a non-negotiable staple in my kids’ diet, so I was relieved to find a recipe right on the back of my favorite gluten-free Bisquick box. It quickly became a weeknight go-to. These nuggets are even freezer-friendly, which makes meal prep a breeze.

How to Make Gluten-Free Chicken Nuggets Step by Step

Gluten-free chicken nuggets ingredients

Gather the ingredients: Gather all the ingredients together. Preheat your oven to 450°F. Lightly spray a baking sheet with gluten-free cooking spray and set it aside.

Overhead view of a zip-top plastic bag filled with a dry breading mix made from gluten-free Bisquick, Parmesan, and seasonings.

Make the coating: In a large plastic storage bag, combine 3/4 cup Bisquick Gluten Free mix, 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese, 1 tsp paprika, and 1/2 tsp salt or garlic salt. Shake gently to mix.

Plate of raw, diced chicken breast cut into nugget-sized pieces, ready for coating.

Cut the chicken: Slice 2 chicken breasts into small, nugget-sized pieces. For even cuts, halve the breasts lengthwise, then cut those pieces into smaller chunks.

Bowl of chicken nugget pieces coated in beaten egg, prepped for breading.

Coat with egg: Crack 1 egg into a medium bowl and beat it slightly. Add the chicken pieces and toss until every piece is evenly coated in the egg.

Raw chicken pieces added to the bag of seasoned flour mix, ready to be coated.

Toss in the coating: Transfer the egg-coated chicken into the bag with the seasoned Bisquick mixture. Seal the bag and turn it several times until all the chicken pieces are fully covered.

Breaded chicken nuggets arranged on a baking sheet, drizzled with melted butter, before baking.

Add butter: Melt 3 tbsp of butter in a small microwave-safe dish. Arrange the coated chicken pieces on the greased baking sheet in a single layer. Drizzle the melted butter evenly over the top.

Bake until golden: Bake for 20 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and the coating is golden and crisp.

Serve and enjoy: Remove from the oven and let cool slightly. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce. Enjoy!

Gluten-Free Cooking Tips

  • Cutting your chicken into small, uniform pieces ensures they cook at the same rate. This helps avoid undercooked centers or overcooked edges, especially when frying or baking.
  • After dredging, gently press the breadcrumb coating into the food with your hands to help it stick better and form a thicker crust. This technique creates a more satisfying crunch and helps prevent the coating from falling off during cooking.
  • Give each piece some breathing room in the pan. Crowding lowers the oil temperature, leading to soggy, greasy results instead of crisp golden crusts. Cook in batches if needed for the best texture.

Serving Suggestions

These homemade nuggets are always a hit at my house, especially with a side of ketchup or honey mustard for dipping. You can pair them with crispy fries, gluten-free onion rings, or some steamed veggies to round out the meal. They’re also great for lunchboxes (my go-to for busy weekdays!) or served on a platter as a crowd-pleasing party appetizer.

Storage Instructions

If you’re lucky enough to have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

These nuggets also freeze beautifully, whether cooked or uncooked. Just lay them out in a single layer on a baking sheet until frozen, then transfer to a freezer-safe bag.

When you’re ready to reheat, pop them in the oven or air fryer to bring back that crispy, golden coating, just like fresh.

  1. Hands down the best gluten free nuggets I made by far! Thank you for your time sharing this recipe. Your new friend, who has a 8 year old picky eater.

  2. I made this last night for my husband and son. We recently learned my son has an issue with gluten in addition to his already-known dairy allergy. My son is only 3 and picky! I am happy to say he LOVED these. I just used the seasonings and bisquick mix and it turned out great! I think next time I will try adding breadcrumbs instead of cheese in this recipe to add extra crunch. (I just completely omitted it this time) This website has been a godsend for us! thank you!

  6. Delicious and addicting! So fun to have “Chick-fil-A” nuggets again!! These are super quick and easy to make and they turn out great every time. I used Aldi’s cheddar biscuit mix since I didn’t have the suggested pancake mix, and the Aldi cheddar biscuit mix has buttermilk powder in it, which I think is the key! I also added smoked paprika instead of regular paprika to give it a little bit of a smokey flavor.

This make a lot of food! Enough for 3-4 adult portions. They reheat really well too!

  7. These were so good! Followed recipe except for the butter. Trying to be healthy, so just sprayed with PAM, and they were still delicious! Thank you for a great recipe!

    2. Prish …… cooking in the air fryer sounds like a good idea, ‘specially during the hot weather …… did you spritz the nuggets with a little oil spray before cooking in the air fryer?

  13. Curious as to the purpose of the melted butter drizzled over the chicken prior to cooking? Have never seen that before.
    Thank you
