IHOP Gluten-Free Menu Items (Restaurant Guide)

You know those mornings when you wake up craving a big, delicious breakfast but don’t feel like cooking? If you follow a gluten-free diet, finding restaurant options can sometimes feel tricky. IHOP no longer offers its gluten-friendly menu, but there are still a few options you may be able to enjoy depending on your needs. I’ve rounded them up below to make your next IHOP visit a little easier.

IHOP Gluten-Free Menu Items

Like any fast-food restaurant, there’s always a risk of gluten cross-contamination when dining out. Shared kitchens, workspaces, utensils, preparation methods, and even accidental exposure can pose challenges for those with strict dietary needs. If you have celiac disease or another health condition requiring a strict gluten-free diet, it’s best to exercise caution when dining at IHOP.

IHOP’s Gluten-Free Statement

IHOP recently changed their menu and options when it comes to gluten-free. They don’t have a gluten-free menu and there’s a notable risk of cross-contamination in their kitchens. Here is IHOP’s official statement regarding allergens:

Because we have multiple sources of allergens and gluten-containing ingredients in our shared cooking and prep areas, including common fryer oil, we are unable to guarantee that any menu item can be completely free of allergens or gluten-containing ingredients. In addition, we use highly refined soybean oil in our fryers, which the FDA exempts from being labeled as an allergen. Due to the complexity of our ingredients, other allergenic foods may be present in a menu item, but not declared on this section of the menu.”

Special Requests

To reduce the risk of cross-contamination, ask the IHOP kitchen staff to clean appliances, utensils, and preparation spaces before preparing your meal. You can also ask them to use fresh gloves when handling your gluten-free order. While there’s no guarantee they’ll be able to prevent cross-contamination, it’s important to take steps to reduce it when possible.

What To Avoid At IHOP

Avoid products with bread and breadcrumbs or fried foods, which are often prepared in oil shared with gluten-containing items. Their omelettes and breakfast burritos are made with buttermilk and wheat pancake batter. Flavorings, sauces, and dressings usually have hidden sources of gluten as well.

IHOP has discontinued their gluten free pancakes and waffles. Most other items are cooked on a shared grill so their gluten free options are very few now. Also their sausages are not gluten free. Unfortunately, they are leaving their past Celiac and gluten sensitive customers with few items on the menu that can be trusted.

Just an FYI.
Our local IHOP uses pancake batter in their omelettes. They can be make with shell eggs instead but you must ask. I don’t know if that is franchise wide or not.

Thanks Yvette! We only have the egg white omelettes on this list, which don’t contain gluten per the website but their could be a risk of cross contamination.
