Gluten-Free French Toast

Sometimes the simplest recipes are the ones we come back to again and again, just like this gluten-free French toast. It’s my go-to version because it’s quick, cozy, and always turns out golden and delicious. Made with a handful of pantry staples, this recipe makes it easy to treat yourself to a sweet, cinnamon-spiced breakfast any time the craving hits.

“Simple and delicious. Woke up on a Sunday morning craving French toast. Came here as this is my go to site for GF/DF recipes, I was thrilled to see that I had all the ingredients on hand. I was using up just a few pieces of GF bread and didn’t want to waste the mixture, so I threw that on the griddle as well. Wow! Not only was the French toast delicious but French toast scrambled eggs may just be the new way I get my picky eater to eat eggs!”

French toast has always been one of my favorite breakfast treats—it was my go-to order whenever we went out to eat. While I enjoy a good savory breakfast, there are just some mornings when only something sweet will do. And as much as I love gluten-free pancakes, French toast will always have my heart. I make it with simple ingredients like eggs, milk, cinnamon, and a touch of nutmeg, and it’s especially delicious when made with my homemade gluten-free bread. It’s quick to prep, easy to scale for a crowd, and always a hit with my kids and husband.

How to Make Gluten-Free French Toast Step by Step
Gather all the ingredients together.
Make the egg mixture: In a shallow dish, such as a pie plate or casserole dish, whisk together 4 large eggs, 2 tbsp sugar, 2 tsp ground cinnamon, ¼ tsp ground nutmeg, ¼ tsp salt, ½ tsp pure vanilla extract, and ½ cup milk (or dairy-free alternative).
Prep the skillet and dip the bread: Heat 2 tbsp of butter (or dairy-free alternative) in a skillet over medium heat. Dip 8 slices of gluten-free bread into the egg mixture, flipping to coat both sides well. The longer the bread soaks, the more custardy the center will be, though it may take a bit longer to cook.
Cook the French toast: Place the soaked bread slices in the skillet and cook over medium heat for 2–3 minutes per side, or until golden brown. Flip and cook the other side until browned.
Serve and enjoy: Serve immediately, or keep slices warm on a baking sheet in a 275°F oven while you finish cooking the rest. Enjoy!
Gluten-Free Cooking Tips
- If you have time, lay the gluten-free bread slices out on a baking sheet for at least 30 minutes before cooking. Slightly dried-out bread soaks up the custard better and gives you that perfect golden crust without getting soggy.
- I love using an electric skillet when making French toast for the whole family—it lets me cook several slices at once, so breakfast is ready faster.
- If you’re cooking for a crowd, place cooked slices on a baking sheet in a 275°F oven to keep them warm and crisp while you finish the rest.
Serving Suggestions
I love serving this gluten-free French toast with a dusting of powdered sugar, a drizzle of maple syrup, and fresh berries on the side. It’s just the right mix of sweet and cozy—perfect for slow mornings or weekend brunch with the family.
Storage Instructions
Store leftover French toast in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. To reheat, warm slices in a skillet over low heat or pop them in the toaster or oven until heated through.
You can also freeze cooked slices—just let them cool, then place them in a freezer-safe bag with parchment between each slice. Reheat straight from frozen in the toaster or oven.

This is my go-to French Toast recipe. Perfect, except with most tiny gluten free bread, you get more like 12 slices out of it (which is almost an entire loaf, ugh).
This a perfect recipe, I made my gf recipe and used the same one for my husband’s regular French toast, I wish I could pin a pic on here!! Delicious and very tasty
I haven’t had good gluten free French toast until tonight. It used to be one of my favorite things to eat.The kids and I had it for dinner. I ended up using bread from a recipe from meaningful eats and it turned out fantastic! I just cut the bread to 1 inch slices and put in the toaster oven for 8 minutes. Delish! And, I had some happy kiddos.
